Honoring a literary giant - Premchand
The 31st of July was Munshi Premchand's 133rd Birthday.
When I walked into the assembly hall, I saw people sitting behind the
curtains. They were beautifully dressed in colorful costumes according to
their roles. As I looked up, I saw a huge poster of Premchand. The show started with a talk on Munshi Premchand's life and his famous works. One of his popular short stories-Boodhi Kaaki was adapted in
drama form.
It is the story of an old widow who gives away
all her possessions to her nephew and his wife
and later gets ill treated by them. The main
scene was on the occasion of a family wedding,
when she was left to starve and she had to
resort to eating left-overs from the dirty utensils. This scene brought tears to everybody's eyes. It showed us how some cold blooded people
disrespect their elders. Shabnam, of class 9
played the role of Boodhi kaki ,beautifully and
convincingly.
The others also did a fantastic job. The
play had a great impact on the audience.
The play ended with loud round of
applause which made the participants feel
over whelmed. Everybody congratulated
them for their brilliant performances.
It also highlighted the universal appeal of Premchand's themes. A realization that things have not moved very far in our
society since his time!
